Corus – music for the hearing impaired.

Corus is a corporate identity, packaging and product design. The idea is to create a vibration collar for the people with deafness or hearing loss to be able to enjoy the authentic experience of music through vibration. For the people with deafness or hearing loss, the part of their brain that usually used for processing sound is learning and adapting to process vibration. Corus is a manufacturer of the vibration collar. Furthermore, Corus provides music that converted from sound input to vibration input for the authentic experience of music. Corus is a study that builds on research from Ryerson University in Toronto, where the team developed a chair based on the principle of the transformation of sounds input to vibration.

“Corus” comes from the mixing of the word “core” and “chorus”. “Core” represent the vibration is the core of the sound, and “chorus” is the part of the song structure, which is the refrain or a repeat of the catchy part of the song, represent the idea of the hearing impaired could “hear” (feel) the music again like the chorus that comes back in the song.

Identity

The tilde symbol represent the connection between language and vibration wave. Music is one type of communication. The part of the brain which usually use to perceive sounds adapt to perceive vibrations. In an abstractly thinking, the brain learn a new language. The vibration wave represent how they perceive music, which is through vibration.

Vibration collar

I created a simple shape collar which is sit comfortably on your neck. Also, this simple shape is represent a “c shape” which is the first letter of the name “Corus”.

I also use 3D printing technology to print the vibration collar as an example how it could look like in reality.

Packaging

Simplicity is the aim of Corus packaging design. I use simple template including only logo, product illustration and illustration elements on the box and inside the manual booklet to create the fun of using the product.
